Structure of the final rounds

The group stage determines which teams meet in the final rounds. A separate final group is formed for every eight teams. Within such a group, every team remains in competition until its definitive final position is known, so all eight places in the group are determined individually.

Final rounds with 40 teams

All 40 teams can be divided into complete final groups of eight. Therefore, no separate final format is required for remaining teams.

Frequently asked questions

How are the teams divided after the group stage?

The results from the group stage determine which teams meet in the final stage. The first 40 teams are divided into 5 groups of eight; an adapted final format applies to the remaining 0 teams.

How many matches are played?

The format contains 440 matches in total: 380 matches in the initial group stage and 60 matches in the subsequent final stage.
