Structure of the final rounds
The final stage is structured so that losing a match does not immediately end a team's tournament. After each match, the team continues to another placement match. After three matches, every team in a complete final group of eight has reached its own final position.
Final rounds with 54 teams
The final rounds for 54 teams consist of 6 complete groups of eight teams and a remaining group of 6 teams. Each complete group determines eight individual final positions. The format for the last group is adapted to the number of teams remaining.
The final six teams are divided into two groups of three. After the group matches, the two group winners play each other, as do the two second-placed teams and the two third-placed teams. These three placement matches determine the final six positions.
