Structure of the final rounds

A complete final group of eight teams consists of three rounds. Four matches are played in the first round. Matches for the upper and lower halves of the final group then follow. In the final round, each individual final position is contested.

Final rounds with 56 teams

All 56 teams can be divided into complete final groups of eight. Therefore, no separate final format is required for remaining teams.

Frequently asked questions

How are the teams divided after the group stage?

The ranking from the group stage determines the division of the final rounds. Based on their position, the teams are divided into 7 complete final groups of eight and, where necessary, a smaller remaining group.

How many matches are played?

The group stage consists of 147 matches. The subsequent final rounds contain 84 matches. The complete tournament therefore consists of 231 matches.

Does every team play the same number of matches after the group stage?

Yes. Because 56 teams can be divided exactly into 7 final groups of eight, every team plays three matches after the group stage. After these three matches, each team's definitive final position is known.
