This tournament format for 36 teams consists of 3 groups followed by cross-over and placement finals. After the group stage, teams with similar rankings are brought together to compete for the different final positions.

Structure of the final rounds
The ranking in the initial group stage determines the rest of the tournament. Eight teams at a time are brought together in a final group. They then play three further matches, with cross-over and placement matches determining each team's final position.
Final rounds with 36 teams
After the group stage, 32 of the 36 teams are divided into 4 final groups of eight. Each complete final group plays twelve matches. An adapted final stage is used for the remaining 4 teams.
The final four teams play two semi-finals. The winners then play for positions 33 and 34, while the losers play for positions 35 and 36. This determines all four remaining final positions individually.
