How does this tournament format work?
This format combines a group stage with extensive placement finals. The 54 teams first play in 23 groups. Based on their finishing position in the group, they are then divided into final groups in which the definitive final standings are decided.

Structure of the final rounds
The ranking in the initial group stage determines the rest of the tournament. Eight teams at a time are brought together in a final group. They then play three further matches, with cross-over and placement matches determining each team's final position.
Final rounds with 54 teams
After the group stage, 48 of the 54 teams are divided into 6 final groups of eight. Each complete final group plays twelve matches. An adapted final stage is used for the remaining 6 teams.
The final six teams are divided into two groups of three. After the group matches, the two group winners play each other, as do the two second-placed teams and the two third-placed teams. These three placement matches determine the final six positions.

After the group stage, teams with similar rankings are placed together. This means the highest-ranked teams compete for the highest final positions, while the other teams continue playing for the subsequent positions.
