Groups, crossover and consolation finals for 16 teams (26 Teams | 8 Groups)
Organise a tournament where teams move into different leagues after the group stage. Each league has its own final ranking, decided through crossover and consolation finals or an adapted format for fewer than 16 teams.
Layout for 26 Teams and 8 Groups
After the group stage the 26 teams are divided over 1 league of 16 teams and one league of 10 teams. That last league uses this format:
With 10 to 15 teams, crossover and consolation finals for the first eight teams are supplemented with matches for the remaining teams, determining their final positions as well.
Teams: 26
Groups: 8
Leagues: 2
Group-stage matches: 30
Final-stage matches: 45
Total number of matches: 75
How does this tournament format work?
The tournament starts with a group stage. The final standings determine which league each team enters. The highest-ranked teams join League A, followed by League B, League C and further leagues if needed.
A full league contains 16 teams competing in crossover and consolation finals. If the total is not a multiple of 16, the lowest league uses a suitable format. Every league has its own ranking starting at place 1.
In a league of 16 teams, placement matches begin with eight round-of-16 games. Winners compete for the highest positions while losers continue through consolation finals. This determines the other positions within the league.
Qualification based on group position
Qualification may use a fixed group position, such as 2nd in Group C. If not all teams with the same group position fit into one league, they are ranked against one another. Best 2nd (3) means the third-best second-placed team across the original groups.
MyTournament.info determines the qualification method automatically. After generating the schedule, the organiser can change it for each group position.
What if a league has fewer than 16 teams?
Not every tournament has exactly 16, 32, 48 or 64 teams. The lowest league therefore automatically uses a suitable combination of group games, crossover finals and placement matches.
- 1 team: the remaining team plays no further placement match and finishes in last place.
- 2 teams: one final.
- 3 teams: one group where every team plays the others.
- 4 teams: one single round-robin competition with three matches per team.
- 5 teams: a group of 3 and a group of 2, followed by placement finals.
- 6 teams: two groups of 3, followed by placement finals.
- 7 teams: the top four play semi-finals and finals; the remaining three play in a group.
- 8 teams: crossover and consolation finals for 8 teams.
- 9 teams: three groups of 3, followed by three new placement groups.
- With 10 to 15 teams, crossover and consolation finals for the first eight teams are supplemented with matches for the remaining teams, determining their final positions as well.
